Ana Maisema who is a doctor at the Ministry of Health’s Incident Management Team has revealed that during the height of COVID-19 earlier this year, they almost reached a stage of having to decide who to save and who to not.
She says in the middle of July when we were recording around 1000 cases on a daily basis, they had to shift their focus because they knew they could not stop the transmission of the virus even with everyones help.
While speaking at the launch of the framework for the return of sports and recreational activities in the country, Dr Maisema says they had to change their strategy and focused on saving lives.
She says they started to look at the vulnerable and people who were getting sick.
She says with the recent drop in cases, frontliners on the ground now feel that they can have a breather because the death rate is also decreasing.
Dr Maisema also says that a number of their indicators which is used to monitor the progress of the outbreak of COVID-19 is slowly turning orange and yellow.
She has thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Fiji Sports Commission for being by their side during this crisis and letting the Health Ministry use their facilities.
She says the role of the FMF Gymnasium and the Vodafone Arena which is being used as a field hospital was very important in combating the virus.
