The Water Authority of Fiji says the water level at the Vaturu Dam is nearing a critical level.
It is urging its customers in Nadi and Lautoka to use water sparingly.
Acting General Manager Operations, Sekove Uluinayau says this has resulted in a low inflow of raw water from the Vaturu Dam to the Nagado Water Treatment Plant.
Uluinayau says the prediction from the Fiji Meteorological Service is that there may be below-average rainfall in the next few months.
He says the Vaturu Dam level is currently at 521 metres.
The safe water level at the Vaturu Dam is 527 metres.
He is urging customers in Nadi and Lautoka to minimize water usage, particularly for car washing, watering of plants and gardens, irrigation of new turf, topping up of swimming pools and while washing of hard surfaces, like walls, driveways, and footpaths is strongly discouraged.
