The Water Authority of Fiji is urging people in the Western Division from Nadi to Lautoka to take shorter showers, turn off the tap while brushing their teeth and use water wisely as the water level at Vaturu Dam has reached critical level.
The level is at 521 metres above sea level.
The safe water level is between 527 metres to 522 metres.
The critical level is below 522 metres.
WAF CEO Barry Omundson says the level was 7 metres higher 7 months ago.
He says there was only about 40 millilitres of rain in Lautoka last Thursday and only 5 millilitres of rain at Vaturu Dam.
He says that is the primary reason water level at the dam is low as they do not get rain in that catchment compared to elsewhere.
Omundson adds people need to cut down on activities like car washing, or watering compounds and gardens.
The CEO also adds that all Fijians, no matter who they are or where they live, must use water responsibly at all times and think about fellow Fijians and how their actions affect them as water wastage leads to disruptions.
Omundson says the Authority is currently seeking to work with international partners on the feasibility of an additional water source in the Western Division.
