A Waste Transfer Station for the Central Division is now being constructed at the Nasinu old quarry site to cater for sorting out waste before it is taken to the Naboro landfill.
The facility will bring down overall waste management costs and improve the proper management of waste.
$500,000 has been allocated in the 2016/2017 National Budget for this project.
Apart from this, the construction of Stage 2 of the Naboro landfill is expected to finish by mid‑2018.
$3.7 million was provided in 2016/2017 National Budget for the transition of the Naboro landfill Stage 1 to Stage 2.
This will involve the construction of Cell 1 and Cell 2 for an additional five years of landfill space.
The Naboro Landfill which has been in operation since October 2005 caters for the Suva City Area, Nasinu, Nausori, Navua, and Korovou.
The government is also having discussions regarding the need to install proper landfills in the Western and Northern Division.
This will include further strengthening the JICA funded Western Division Waste Management Project that began in August 2008.
