Waqainabete clarifies the capacity of Nadi Hospital is adequate in meeting expectations of both tourists and locals

The Minister for Health, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete has clarified in parliament today that the capacity of the Nadi Hospital is adequate in meeting the expectations of both tourists and locals.

Waqainabete highlighted this when questioned by SODELPA MP, Viliame Gavoka to clarify whether the capacity of the Nadi Hospital is adequate for both tourists and locals.

When further questioned by SODELPA MP, Adi Litia Qionibaravi if certain changes have been done to address the recent mysterious death of the two tourists in Nadi, Waqainabete says they have the necessary equipment in the Nadi hospital to be able to look after tourists but they need to be alerted early of the type of sickness.

The Minister says the 77 bed Nadi hospital is one of the busiest and biggest hospitals that sees 300 to 500 patients a day with 22 doctors.

Waqainabete says the Nadi hospital also caters for 97,000 people and provides emergency care.

He says in order to provide a high level of care in Nadi, they have had infrastructure upgrade since 2018 with works up to 90 percent completion.

Waqainabete says the cost of work that is being done is more $3.5 million dollars.

He says that the type of services in the Nadi Hospital include clinical services which is 24 hours maternity and emergency and the out-patient and in-patient services.

Waqainabete says this year they have had specialist doctors form Lautoka coming to the Nadi hospital to do regular specialist out-patients services.

He says in 2018, there were 124,000 out-patients treated, more than 14,000 admissions, nearly 1,000 babies delivered and 18,000 patients that needed minor surgical treatment.

Waqainabete says they are working closely with their staff in Nadi to ensure that they have a high level of commitment in as service.

The Minister says in a recently survey done on the Nadi Hospital, it was revealed that 88 percent of respondent waited for less then 1 hour to be seen and 20 percent said they were seen with in one to two hours.
