Wallabies great, David Campese has blasted the current state of international rugby, labelling it “a joke” as referees dominate tests.
Campese’s comments come as the Rugby Championship is poised on a knife-edge between four teams struggling for consistency.
The former World Cup winner and record test try scorer feels performance is being compromised by rules and officiating.
He says it's a farce and the referees think they are the most important person on the field.
Campese says they think it's about them, but it's not, It's about the game, the players and the supporters.
He further says people don't pay their money to watch a referee blow his whistle; they go to watch a game of football.
He says they want to see tries, not penalty goals and it's sad the way things are now, it's a joke.
Campese, universally regarded as one of rugby’s great entertainers, says the sport is becoming an increasingly difficult spectacle for fans.
He adds TMO and referees are ruining the game.
The All Blacks will meet the Wallabies in Round 5 of the Rugby Championship at 9.45pm next Thursday, while Argentina will host the Springboks at 7.10am next Sunday.
