Wales has joined England's Rugby Football Union in dropping its sevens programme due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Welsh Rugby Union confirmed in a statement its men’s sevens programme would cease to operate “for the foreseeable future” due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19.

They say the global nature of the pandemic and its financial implications – including the disruption of the World Rugby Sevens Series – has rendered the programme unsustainable in the current climate.

Welsh Rugby Union performance director Ryan Jones said it was a “regrettable situation” but one the union had no choice but to make.
