The people of Wailevu in Vanua Levu are overjoyed to find out that they will soon have a secondary school of their own which will end years of daily travel by students from Wailevu to go to schools in Labasa and Savusavu.
The Tui Wailveu, Ratu Kinijoji Maivalili said 300 students from 29 villages travel daily to get education and it is a burden for the parents to arrange for their children’s' fares and other needs.
He said it is also hard to find schools for the students as many are full.
However, he said news from the Education Minister Filipe Bole yesterday that the new school to be called Uluivalili Secondary School will be opening in Wailevu next year has brought joy to the villagers.
Ratu Kinijoji said parents work very hard in Wailevu to earn enough money to see that their children are not deprived of quality education compared to other students in the urban areas.
The Education Ministry will assist in the establishment of the new school with a capital grant of $251,000 and construction work is expected to start this year.
The first phase of work will include the building of a 3 classroom block and all the other basic needs for a school while the last phase is expected to be complete by 2014.
