The Water Authority of Fiji is urging Fijians to dispose of their rubbish properly, after finding a tyre lodged in a pump at one of their Raw Water Pumping Stations which resulted in low water inflow.
The Authority conducted an investigation at the Waila Raw Water Pumping Station, where the tyre was found lodged in the number 3 pump during a check of the impellers.
WAF CEO, Barry Omundson says incorrect disposal of rubbish is quite a major issue and they ask the public to refrain from doing so.
Omundson says once that rubbish finds its ways into the pumps and pipes, surrounding areas are badly affected because of disruptions to water supply and other services while they conduct repairs.
He says not only is it a major inconvenience to your fellow Fijians because of the downtime, it is very expensive and damaging to their operations, overall.
Meanwhile,WAF is also asking people to conserve water, especially in light of the drought season, and to store at least two days worth of water in case of emergencies.
