The Vusuya Naari Shakti Mothers Club from Nausori celebrated Holi by singing folk songs in Suva City today.
While sharing her message at Sky Glory, club president, Salochna Lal says Holi is a festival of colours which brightens one's life with happiness and prosperity.
She says this year's Holi is different compared to the previous years as she lost her mother-in-law, however, she has gathered with her other club members to make this an auspicious day as it comes once a year.
As we celebrate Holi, Lal encourages everyone to live life to the fullest.
The president also says that the club members have also sung folk songs(Chautaal and Jogira) in Valelevu and G Prasad and Associates.
According to Hindu holy book, the arrogant demonic King Hiranyakashyap who could neither be killed by a man nor an animal had demanded that everybody worship him as God.
The king's son, Prahlada, disagreed and chose to remain devoted to Lord Vishnu so the king's sister, tricked him into sitting on a pyre with her.
While Holika protected herself with a cloak, Prahlada remained exposed and as the fire blazed, the cloak flew from Holika's body and encased Prahlada, thus saving his life.
Later, Lord Vishnu appeared in the avatar of Narsimha, half man and half lion, and killed the king. This is why Holi begins with the Holika bonfire, which marks the end of evil.
Holi celebrations start on the night before Holi, where people perform rituals in front of a bonfire, praying for their inner evil to be destroyed and celebrating with colours the next day.
Holi also marks the end of winter, the arrival of spring and the celebration of the victory of good over evil.
