The ongoing riverbank erosion in Vunaqoru village in Navosa is a challenge that the villagers are facing and they are now living in fear that their village will soon be relocated.
While speaking to fijivillage News, Village Headman Navitalai Matalau says if this continues, then they will be relocated soon.
Matalau says heavy rain continues to worsen the situation causing further erosion and adds that since the village is in a flat area, many residents previously farmed along the riverside, however, due to the erosion, they have now moved their plantations to unaffected areas.
The 42-year-old says although they have planted coconut trees, over the years strong currents have washed them away.
He adds the provincial office is aware of their struggles but no action has been taken to address the issue.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary for Environment, Sivendra Michael says they have not been informed about the challenges faced by the villagers of Vunaqoru.
Michael says now that this issue has been raised, they will need to go and carry out consultation with the villagers.
