Villagers of Nukutocia in Ovalau will now have better access and convenient pathways for crossing after the commissioning of their new foot crossing worth $26,000 by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka.
The newly government-funded crossing was inaugurated the day after the Fiji Day celebration which represents a significant milestone for the villagers in their partnership with the government which connects the eastern and western sections of the village, providing essential access for a population of 195 individuals, residing in 45 households.
While officiating at the foot crossing, Ditoka says Nukutocia Village has always been recognized for its determination and unwavering efforts in promoting development therefore, the new inclusion guarantees accessibility to the village area situated on the other side of the creek, regardless of the prevailing weather conditions.
He says the government remains committed to prioritizing the well-being of every Fijian, regardless of where they are located geographically to offer equal opportunities to every citizen of this country, including rural and maritime communities for the nation's growth and development.
The Minister further says the foot-crossing bridge serves not only as a convenient pathway for villagers to traverse the creek but also guarantees a safer journey for school children, women, and elders of the village, both day and night.
The Minister also spoke to the villagers on the importance of a comprehensive village development plan, stating that significant development necessitates open dialogue, commencing at the grassroots level where each individual plays a unique role in advancing the path of development.
He says it is essential to incorporate risk-informed strategies across various sectors, ensuring the resilience of rural communities in Fiji.
While showing his appreciation for the unwavering dedication of the village towards self-improvement, school teacher and respected advisor to the Nukutocia Village Development Committee, Luke Vateitei says while they have made progress, there are still areas where they need the government's support
He says a village that values leadership and collaboration for the betterment of the community has led to significant improvements in their housing facilities due to their concerted efforts and has also successfully acquired grass-cutting machines, with 20 more on the way.
Vateitei says they are working towards the realization of their vision, which includes establishing village cooperatives not only for the village but also for the entire Tikina of Lovoni.
