Villagers of Navunikabi in Namosi protested outside their village hall today

Villagers of Navunikabi in Namosi have protested outside their village hall saying that they do not want the construction of the three hydro dams in Namosi.

The hydro dams have been proposed to be built on the land owned by the villagers of Waini-koroiluva, Waini-kovu and Waivaka in Namosi while some members of the mataqali Nabukebuke claim they will be negatively affected from this.

The protest occurred during a consultation held by Hydro Fiji Pty Ltd.

Men and women of the villages were seen holding up banners that were depicting their concerns and shouted “We say no to Hydro”.

This is the third Environmental Impact Assessment consultation to be done with various stakeholders and landowners with the first two held in Suva and Navua.

Mataqali Nabukebuke in Navunikabi Village in Namosi highlighted that some mataqali have agreed to the proposed hydro dams but there are also several people and landowning units that have not agreed and have not signed leases with the developers
