Close to 700 villagers of Moala village in Nadi have been told that relocation will be the best long term decision for them.
Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy has had discussions with Moala village elders and told them their best option is to relocate but the decision will be up to the villagers themselves.
He told them that the ministry can carry out river bank protection works since the village is similar to a peninsula and they have land on the higher side.
He told the villagers that the government will always be ready to assist them.
Scoping works will commence in flood prone areas in Nadi and Lautoka next week.
Reddy visited Yako, Moala, Narewa, Navatulevu and Nakavu villages in Nadi and Vitogo village and Naikabula Subdivision in Lautoka.
All the areas visited are flood prone areas. The visit is to make improvements on the drainage systems, improvement of river engineering and river bank and coastal construction services.
The Ministry’s Lautoka team will commence scoping works in these areas from next Monday.
