The Vakatabu concept is the process of replenishing marine life, rehabilitation of the land and strengthening the iTaukei traditional knowledge to articulate action on new development pathways.
This was the comment made by Assistant Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, Ratu Isikeli Tuiwailevu during the opening of the Vakatabu Conference at Studio 6 today.
Ratu Isikeli says we must continue to actively engage in the traditional iTaukei way of life.
A student from Pacific Theological College, Setela Rasiga shared her ‘Vakatabu’ journey with her project name ‘Nana’ or mother project, related to how a mother protects her children.
Rasiga says this is how soil has been eroded because we are not taking care of our natural surroundings.
She says we can use our traditional knowledge to protect our environment.
The conference comprises the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, the Fiji National University, Pacific Conference of Churches, Pacific Theological College, the paramount chief of the Burebasaga, Ro Teimumu Kepa, Tui Suva and some Turaga ni Yavusa.
The Vakatabu Conference theme is ‘Ask for the Ancient Paths and Walk in it’.
