The Higher Education Commission in Fiji has appointed the five members of the University Review Committee to evaluate the overall quality of the performance of the universities in Fiji.
While delivering his ministerial statement, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro says this independent intentional and comprehensive evaluation of universities is done to ensure that our government's commitment to world-class education is not only in words but also in excellent legislation that we are bound by.
Radrodro says the purpose of the University Review Committee is to assess and evaluate the overall performance, the overall progress and quality of a university including its educational programs, faculties, facilities and administrative processes.
FijiFirst MP, Hem Chand says external reviews are good intentions for education in nation-building however, the fundamentals need to be corrected first.
Chand says the employment market information shows the programs offered by the universities are not relevant or are outdated and do not match the unfolding and emerging skill set required in the country.
He says the Higher Education Commission Fiji should align the progression of students from secondary school to universities.
He adds that overseeing the review process of higher education institutions ensures that the programs developed by the institutions meet national standards and foster cooperation among higher education institutions and linkages between higher education institutions and industry.
