To help those that have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry for Forestry will be establishing a programme where people have to plant trees and they will pay them.
The Ministry says the Cash for Work or Cash for Tree Planting Programme involves people planting trees in their communities or villages that will be counted towards the 30 Million Trees in 15 Years Initiative.
This program was supposed to be done by their officers but with the huge number of unemployed people in the country, they have decided to employ those people who are unemployed to plant trees in their communities.
The Ministry says they are working closely with the National Employment Centre on people that are unemployed that they can help by including them in this program.
The programme which is funded by the UNDP is a means of encouraging communities to establish their nurseries and raise fruit trees to enhance their food security.
The initiative will also involve the raising of native seedlings for personal and commercial use to ensure that timber is provided for shelter.
