A Fijian mid‑shipman will be provided with a chance to be part of a graduating class at the United States Naval Academy.
Speaking at a press conference after his visit to Fiji this week, Undersecretary of the United States Navy Tom Modly said this was another example of trying to maintain and improve relationships and build on partnerships with Fiji.
He says the four year program not only offers professional education that can be brought back to Fiji but more importantly it will allow the development of military to military relationships that extend beyond that four year term.
He added that the chosen mid‑shipman will be going to school with people who in ten, fifteen, or twenty years time will be senior leaders in the United States Navy.
Modly also acknowledged that Fiji has vested interests in maintaining fisheries and freedom of navigation in these waters which is also critical to trade as well.
He adds that Fiji like the US is a maritime nation that depends upon the seas for commerce.
He further added that they hope to be partners with Fiji as Fiji develops it’s own economy, and builds greater prosperity for it’s people.
The main purpose of the Undersecretary’s visit was to gain an understanding of the security dynamics of Fiji and its role in the South Pacific.
He met with members of the RFMF earlier this week.
