The University of the South Pacific is today paying tribute to the contributions and belief of Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi in a robust education system.
In a statement, USP Vice Chancellor Professor Rajesh Chandra has called the Roko Tui Bau and late Vice President a true son of Fiji for his contributions towards the development of Fiji in many areas.
Chandra says Ratu Joni placed special emphasis on education and was one of the first leaders to recognise the role education played in encouraging inclusiveness and equality in Fiji.
He says the University treasures many of his written works including a book on ‘Indigenous issues: a personal perspective’ which is part of the Pacific Collection at USP.
Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi launched his book ‘A Personal Perspective’ in 2008, which is a compilation of his speeches and writings on education.
He says Ratu Joni was a well known and highly respected leader who stood for the rights of all Fijians, regardless of ethnicity, race, political affiliations or economic status and sought to build bridges, challenge stereotypes and encouraged inclusiveness as part of the process of nation‑building.
Chandra says Ratu Joni will be remembered for his distinguished career and outstanding personality.
