People of Korotubu Village were full of joy after the United Nations Population Fund Pacific donated sewing machines, brush cutters, gum boots, refrigerators and other items to women and youth to sustain disaster risks, climate change adaptation and effective humanitarian response.
Uuisori Youth Club Leader, Eseromi Sivivatu says they will use the tools to collectively generate income for the village to use for preparedness for future disasters.
Sivivatu says they are excited to work together with new ideas and skills to help community to be better prepared and conveyed his gratitude for the assistance provided by the UNFPA Pacific.
UNFPA Director for the Pacific and Representative in Fiji, Iori Kato says they also donated IT equipment (desktops, laptops, projectors, printers and others to the Command Center of the Northern Division Commissioner’s Office.
He says they believe the donations will contribute to a well-functioning command centre for better preparedness and response to a future disaster.
Commissioner of Northern Division, Uraia Rainima acknowledged the timely donation by UNFPA Pacific on World Humanitarian Day 2023 will be remembered by everyone in the Northern Division.
Rainima says the assistance focused on women and youth makes good development and humanitarian sense, as women are the backbone of the households and young people are the foundation for future.
UNFPA Pacific looks forward to supporting the Government and people working closely with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management and other partners.
UNFPA Pacific has also implemented a five-year Multi-Country Programme for 14 Pacific island countries that commenced this year till 2027.
