The Minister for Housing, Premila Kumar says they suspect that two of their staff were involved in the land sale scam in River Road settlement in Narere and the Millennium informal settlement in Nausori.

Kumar says the two staff are being investigated by FICAC and they have not reported to work since this issue surfaced.

The Minister believes two former staff are also allegedly involved.

She says the issue first surfaced when the Ministry noticed a letter was issued under a fake letterhead of the Ministry to a person in Bangladesh in Labasa, giving him consent to apply for a temporary water connection.

Kumar says another three fake letters were found a day later after an inspection was carried out by the Ministry at Millennium informal settlement in Nausori.

She says both cases were immediately informed to FICAC and to date eight cases from the Millennium informal settlement and another three cases from River Road have been given to FICAC.

She says this time the letter was authorizing people to construct dwellings within the settlement.

Kumar says only two families in River Road settlement in Narere have notified FICAC about the incidents and investigations are underway.

She confirms that there are no land lots for sale or lease in the development lease areas controlled by the Ministry.

Kumar says the allocation of lots in these areas will only happen after the completion of the upgrade in line with the lot allocation policies.

She says a similar scam was uncovered by FICAC in relation to a land in Makoi.
