Two people have passed away due to leptospirosis bringing the total number of deaths to 31 this year.
23 people have died in the Western Division, 3 in Central Division and 5 in the Northern Division.
A 35-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man from Nadi have passed away between 23rd March and yesterday.
Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor James Fong says there have been 1,528 confirmed cases of leptospirosis this year.
He says the numbers have increased again beyond the outbreak threshold in the Western Division in the last week.
Dr. Fong says there have been 617 cases in the Western Division, with 62 new cases in the last week.
475 people have been admitted in the hospital for leptospirosis this year.
Please seek medical care if you have recently had contact with floodwaters, mud, or animals, and develop the following symptoms: fever, muscle pain, headache.
Important prevention measures include wearing full covered footwear at all times when going outdoors, avoiding swimming in flooded waters, using clean fresh water to wash up after exposure to muddy water, and keeping all food and drinks covered and away from rats.
The leptospirosis bacteria is spread to humans through the urine of infected animals, such as cows, pigs, rats and dogs.
