Twenty kidney patients have benefitted from free surgeries from a visiting vascular surgeon and many others have had consultations done.
Specialist Nephrologist Dr Amrish Krishnan says the specialists, Dr Will Butcher and Dr Alan Parnham came from Gold Coast, Australia to support Nephrology and Dialysis services in Fiji through an academic sponsorship.
Dr Krishnan says the specialists were in Fiji last week and departed yesterday after doing 20 surgeries and reviewing patients in Suva and Labasa.
He says three patients had Peritoneal Dialysis Catheters placed last week, and will now be able to do dialysis at home without depending on a dialysis machine.
Dr Krishnan says the visiting team has pledged support for The National Kidney Research and Treatment Centre which will be based temporarily in Nadera, and a satellite unit will be based in Nadi and he says this is possibly the first of many visits from the team.
He says two nurses received training in Peritoneal Dialysis in Gold Coast earlier this year.
