The trial date for the case of Thakur Punja who was allegedly found with cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana in Lami, will be set after two pre-trial conferences in August.
Punja, who is the son of a prominent businessman, appeared before Suva Magistrate Yogesh Prasad this morning without his lawyer, Iqbal Khan, but was represented by another lawyer who read out the defence’s request.
Khan had requested 7 documents which the prosecution asked for 14 days to prepare.
The prosecution only managed to submit the agreed statements today.
The case has now been adjourned to the 2nd of August.
Punja is charged with one count each of unlawful possession of 0.84 grams of methamphetamine, 5.447 grams of cocaine and 6.6 grams of marijuana.
Khan had informed the court that while in custody, there is an alleged confession regarding the alleged possession of marijuana while he has not confessed to possessing cocaine and methamphetamine.
Khan requested the court for the name of every police officer involved in the arrest, raid and escort and also requested that they, including the supervisor of the search team and the dog handler, be produced in court to give statements as well.
