To strengthen building‑back better techniques and aid construction of homes to make them more resilient to adverse weather events, a 2‑week carpentry training for rural carpenters in the Central Division has commenced in Qelekuro Village, Tailevu.
While officiating the opening of the training, Divisional Commissioner Central Setareki Tale says the training programme will help meet a demand for carpenters in rural areas.
Tale also encouraged the participants to use the two weeks to their advantage by gaining knowledge and skills from their facilitators so when a cyclone affects the country in the future, their community will stand proudly with minimal damages to their homes.
He says that the training programme is part of Government’s vision to build on existing knowledge and skills to ensure construction of decent, quality homes and to contribute to resilience of communities.
Meanwhile, National Disaster Management Permanent Secretary Meleti Bainimarama had earlier highlighted that the practical for the programme involves the construction of one house with the use of Government’s Rural Housing 24x16 house plan which has proved durable and resistant to cyclones.
