The vision and legacy of our forefathers should live together and must be upheld.
This was highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad during the 80th Annual Convention of Dakshina India Andhra Sangam in Rakiraki.
Professor Prasad says this is a huge and significant milestone for Dakshina India Andhra Sangam which was established to promote the Telugu language, preserve Telugu culture and establish schools to provide quality education to all the children of Fiji.
He says for the founders who were the Girmitiyas, language was important for spiritual, cultural and emotional development because, when a language is lost, part of, if not most, of that culture is lost however, when a language is preserved, the traditions and customs continue to live on from one generation to the other.
The Deputy Prime Minister says the Dakshina Andhra Sangam of Fiji owns and operates 5 primary and 2 secondary schools therefore every government must recognise and accept the fact that without the input of all communities of Fiji, be it through civil societies, religious or cultural organisations or committees, a government will be unable to provide quality education.
Professor Prasad further says Civil society organizations such as Dakshina India Andhra Sangam plays a significant role in the social, economic and democratic development of Fiji and is an exemplary example of uniting people to advance common goals and interests.
He says their work in the community creates a strong presence in public life, expressing the interests and values of its members.
Professor Prasad says it is also very encouraging that Dakshina India Andhra Sangam has a Young Men’s Association, which focuses on empowering the youth with leadership skills and instil cultural values which also look after the wide interests and general welfare of the women and girls in the organization.
He says Women and youth empowerment are important in the enhancement of their social, economic and political status as having a dedicated representation for women and youth through the Young Men’s Association and Nari Sangh makes them a valuable part of decision-making enabling them to contribute meaningfully to both the organization and broader society.
The 80th Convention theme is, “Sustaining Roots, Cultivating Unity, Nurturing Heritage, Empowering Futures”.
