The Wages Council will be re-activated to review the minimum wage rate for the people of Fiji.
This was highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad when questioned by the media on the increase in the minimum wage rate.
Professor Prasad says the Council will be looking into this and will be reviewed in the shortest possible time.
He says there will also be a thorough consultation and discussion with all the stakeholders to ensure that they come up with a better and well-agreed consulted minimum wage rate.
Meanwhile, following concerns raised earlier by Fiji Labour Party Leader, Mahendra Chaudhry that there is hardly any mention of workers and their wage rates in the 160-page report of the Fiscal Review Committee that deals fairly comprehensively with almost all aspects of the nation’s socio-economic challenges.
Professor Prasad highlighted that the workers of this country know that the coalition government has already restored some of their lost rights and benefits and more will come including a review of the current minimum wage through proper consultation and dialogue with unions and employers.
