People from the Province of Lau today heard during their Provincial Council Meeting that the Government did not like that one politician had said that the late Tui Nayau and former President, Ratu Kamisese Mara was behind the 1987 coup.
Speaking at the Lau Provincial Council Meeting, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the politician did not accept the coup he did was wrong and he tried to tarnish the name of Ratu Mara.
He adds one sad thing is that the politician brought up this issue after the death of Ratu Mara.
The Prime Minister says that some desperate politicians will act in despicable behaviour as it is election year.
He says he will not linger on that topic, because he is at the meeting to hear what the people of the Province of Lau needs.
Meanwhile People’s Alliance Leader, Sitiveni Rabuka was asked questions in February this year on what came out for the first time in 2000 when he released his biography ‘Rabuka of Fiji’ in which he had alleged that he had mentioned the 1987 coup option to the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara during golf two weeks before the coup, and believed he had the tacit support of the late Ratu Mara.
Rabuka said he does not have to apologize to the traditional warrior clan for the late Tui Nayau as the late former President and chief never asked him to do that when the information first came out in his authorized biography.
The late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara had taken legal action over the book's claim that Rabuka told him of a possible military coup to overthrow the late Dr Timoci Bavadra's coalition Government in May 1987.
When asked on the legal action, Rabuka says he believes the late Ratu Mara’s lawyers advised him to desist.
