Eighteen divers have entered the Thai cave to start freeing boys who have been trapped 15 days.

Thai officials at the Tham Luang cave site have said the 13 people inside the cave have been informed and so have their families.

The operation today is likely to take up to eight hours to bring some or all of the boys the 1.7 kilometres, by swimming and diving, from deep inside the cave to the third chamber, from where it is possible to walk.

An Australian doctor assessed the boys last night and gave them the all‑clea.

Once they are out of the cave they will choose the most suitable way to move them and have helicopters on standby in case they are needed.

Heavy rain fell overnight for at least an hour and lighter rain has continued to fall through the morning, worsening already difficult conditions and potentially forcing the Thai government's hand.
