The Daugunu family were proud and emotional as they witnessed Tevita Daugunu captain Fiji to the Singapore 7s title win last weekend.
Tevita lost his mother when he was in Form 3 and then was looked after by his aunt and VitiFM Content Director Litia Daugunu, who is also the wife of former national 7s rep Sailosi Naiteqe.
Tevita who is fondly known by his friends as ‘Bigman’ started playing rugby in the Milo Kaji Competition representing Wailevu from Cakaudrove.
He also attended Lelean Memorial School and Ratu Kadavulevu School before joining the Fiji Corrections Service.
Tevita has captained the Natadra Young Boys, Raiwasa Taveuni and the Wardens team.
He made his debut for the national 7s side in Dubai last year and was promoted to captain last week.
Coach Ben Gollings had earlier said that Daugunu had been fantastic in the way he has led the young players during the local 7s tournaments.
Gollings says Daugunu has shown great leadership qualities. The 29-year-old is married to Karalaini Tokalaulevu Daugunu and have three children.
Fiji will meet England in their first match of the Vancouver 7s at 5.53am Sunday, they will then take on Kenya at 9.04am Sunday in their second match and play USA at 12.35pm Sunday in their final pool match.
