Termite infestation has become a major problem for the people of Fiji, with Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection and co-chair of the Termite Taskforce Committee Sashi Kiran revealing that the Asian subterranean termite species has spread around the country from Lautoka to Labasa in Vanua Levu.
While speaking on fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan, Kiran says Lautoka is severely infested, Nadi is seriously infested, while termites are also found in parts of Ba, Rakiraki, Tavua, Nakasi and Labasa.
Kiran says they had set aside $3 million during their first national budget because they knew there was a termite problem.
She says they will conduct a pilot study in Lautoka where 1,000 houses will use baits to tackle the issue of termite infestation.
The Assistant Minister adds they have been reaching out to Queensland where this is a big problem, and they have been trying to look at how to deal with it.
Kiran says the property prices in Lautoka have really dropped because majority of the houses are infested by termites.
