The founder of Telegram Pavel Durov has been arrested by French police at Le Bourget Airport north of Paris for failing to curb criminal activity on the platform.
Authorities detained the 39-year-old billionaire under a warrant related to his popular Telegram app.
Telegram is ranked as one of the major social media platforms after Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and Wechat.
Durov founded the Telegram app in 2013 which is particularly popular in Russia, Ukraine, and other former Soviet states.
It was banned in Russia in 2018 after Durov refused to hand over user data to the government but the ban was reversed in 2021.
This arrest brings to light a critical debate: How far should tech companies go to ensure their platforms are safe and at what cost to freedoms?
