Students who wish to learn the Tamil language now have the opportunity as the High Commission of India to Fiji has launched a Tamil teaching language program at the Penang Sangam School in Rakiraki.
Indian High Commissioner P.S Karthigeyan says two Tamil teachers from India will be deployed at the Penang Sangam School and the Sangam Primary School in Labasa to conduct the classes.
Karthigeyan has also emphasized the important role of a language in preserving and shaping culture and also in fostering greater understanding between various communities.
This program has been implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Government of Fiji and the India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (SANGAM).
The Tamil language is one of the oldest classical languages in the world and has been a long pending demand of the Fiji Indian community, especially the descendants of the Girmitiya who came to Fiji from present-day Tamil Nadu in the early 20th century.
