All Blacks halfback and Hurricanes co-captain TJ Perenara is on the verge of following Beauden Barrett into a lucrative Japan rugby sabbatical next year.
While the Hurricanes insist Perenara is yet to put pen to paper, sources with knowledge of talks told Stuff.Co his signing is imminent and would mean he misses next year’s Super Rugby Aotearoa in a potentially hefty blow for the Wellington-based side.
But, like Barrett who will join Suntory Sungoliath and miss the Blues’ 2021 season, Perenara could return for All Blacks internationals, with Japan’s Top League scheduled to run from January to May. Its 2019-20 season was cut short by Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the All Blacks play the Wallabies at 3pm this Sunday in their first Bledisloe Cup match in Wellington.
