TC Tino intensifies into a Category 3 cyclone and is expected to move out of Fiji Waters later today

The Nadi Weather Office says Tropical Cyclone Tino has intensified into a Category 3 cyclone and is expected to move out of Fiji Waters by later today and will pass Tonga later tonight.

A Tropical Cyclone Warning is in force for Lakeba,Oneata, Moce, Komo, Kabara, Namuka-i-Lau, Fulaga, Ogea, Ono-i-Lau and Vatoa.

The Weather Office says TC Tino was located 310 kilometres East South-east of Lakeba at 12pm today.

Close to it’s centre, the cyclone is expected to have damaging winds gusting to 170 kilometres per hour.

Strong winds may cause loose objects to fly, damage to root crops and break tree branches.

It may even cause damages to weak structures and blow away roofs when it intensifies to damaging winds.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the Southern and Eastern parts of the larger islands which includes Suva, Navua,  Nausori, Tailevu, and the interior parts of Viti Levu,  Labasa, Seaqaqa, Savusavu and Bua, Lomaiviti and the Lau Group.

The Nadi Weather Office says a flash flood warning remains in force for low lying areas, small streams and flood prone areas of Southern and Eastern parts of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Lau.

Sea flooding should be expected along coastal areas especially during high tides.

Situation Report

No casualties recorded in the North due to TC Tino - Rainima

No casualties have been recorded in the North due to Tropical Cyclone Tino.

Acting Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima says in the morning, they had sent teams around to visit all the evacuation centres, and check on the safety of the people, not only that but to see that they move back to their homes once the weather is clear.

He has applauded members of the public for taking precautionary measures by moving to evacuations centres before the expected time when TC Tino was to make landfall.

Rainima says while it was still daylight, people made the right decisions by moving to the evacuation centres.

Teams have been dispatched from the Northern Emergency Operations Centre this morning to assess damages done by the cyclone.

Rainima says they will send them up to the targeted areas they have already identified and they will be accompanied by military and officers from Met office as well.

Identified areas include Nadogo, Namuka, Udu and Cikobia.

 

78 Evacuation centres active in the Central, Northern and Eastern Division with 3115 evacuees

There are 78 Evacuation centres active in the Central, Northern and Eastern Division with 3115 evacuees.

Acting Commissioner Northern, Uraia Rainima says his team is now on the ground to conduct the initial damage assessment.

He says there were close to 65 evacuation centres activated overnight with more than 2,600 people in the centres.

Rainima says his team will go and check on the evacuees and check if their houses have sustained damages due to TC Tino.

He also says that they are aiming to clear school’s that are evacuation centres quickly, so that classes are not affected on Monday.

Thousands of people without power supply in parts of the Northern Division

Thousands of people living in parts of the Northern Division are currently without power supply.

Energy Fiji Limited says their teams are on the ground to conduct the assessment. 

Meanwhile, Sashi Lata of Bulileka Labasa says there is no power supply in the area since 6pm yesterday.

Lata says there are no fallen power lines in the area.

Dijendra Dutt from Wainikoro, Labasa says they do not have power supply in the area since 5pm yesterday.

Dutt says there are no fallen power lines in the area.

Roads

The Queens and Kings Highways are open.

The Fiji Roads Authority has confirmed that Queens Highway at Vunaniu Flats is now open to two lanes.
