A former Namadi Heights, Suva resident, Joe Suwai who has been living in Minneapolis for more than 15 years says they visited the memorial site for the late George Floyd today and also paid their last respects to him as they get ready for his memorial service tomorrow.
Speaking from Minnesota, Suwai hopes things change for the better in the US.
Suwai says everyone wants justice however it is unfortunate that there have been riots.
He also says the attention on the streets has also moved from COVID-19 to the protests.
Meanwhile new charges have been announced against all of the sacked police officers present at the death of African American George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Court documents show the charge against Derek Chauvin has been elevated to second-degree murder.
The other three officers, previously uncharged, face counts of aiding and abetting murder.
Floyd's death has sparked huge protests across the US against racism and the police killings of black Americans.
The vast majority of demonstrations over the past eight days have been peaceful, but some have turned violent and curfews have been imposed in a number of cities.
