Gloria Sukhu and Manoj Kumar stamped their supremacy in the local chess arena and won the 2019 National Chess Championship at Fiji Olympic House.

Kumar drew with inform Prashant Sarup and Goru Arvind to register 8/9 to achieve his 15th National Chess title.

Sukhu finished the tournament in a similar fashion by drawing with Cydel Terubea to remain unbeaten with 8.5/9 in the Women's National Chess Championship.

Tournament FIDE Arbiter, Krishneel Nair says Manoj and Gloria are Fiji's best chess players by a mile.

Nair says they have dominated their respective categories for many years and should be in upcoming National squads to represent Fiji abroad.

Women's FIDE Master, Hilda Vukikomoala returned to chess as a player after three years and convincingly came second in the Women's Division with 7.5/9, while Cydel Terubea and Tanvi Prasad of Deenbandhoo Primary School finished third and fourth with 6/9 respectively.

Fiji Chess Federation will appoint an independent committee to evaluate the performance of top players and winners in open and women to select two teams for the 2020 World Chess Olympiad in Moscow, Russia in August next year.

The World Chess Olympiad is the 4th largest sporting event in the world where almost 2,000 chess players participate from as many as 190 countries.
