Good news for sugarcane farmers as they will be receiving their final cane payment for the 2018 season today.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation says the corporation has paid out a total of $73.52 per tonne of cane to the farmers to date.

FSC says today they will pay out an additional $11.48 per tonne of cane.

The guaranteed cane price of $85 per tonne is payable to growers in respect of the 2018 cane crop.

FSC had confirmed in June that they had to fork out over $33 million to make up for the $85 per tonne guaranteed cane price for the 2018 sugarcane season.

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had announced in the 2019/2020 National Budget that $30 million has been allocated to subsidise the guaranteed cane price of $85 per tonne in the current financial year.

CEO of the Fiji Sugarcane Growers Council, Sundresh Chetty says the council is thankful to the Government for meeting its commitment for the guaranteed cane price.

Chetty says the council is urging cane growers to make good use of the payment for Diwali.
