Spain captain Olga Carmona, who scored the winning goal in their 1-0 victory over England in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final was informed about her father's death after the match.
According to Spanish media outlet Relevo, she lost her father back home in Madrid last Friday after fighting a long illness.
Her family decided not to inform her so that she can focus on her match.
The mother and brothers of the 23-year-old traveled to Australia on Saturday to encourage and support her. Carmona’s club Real Madrid also expressed condolences and affection to her and her loved ones.
