More than 2,000 residents in the Drasa area in Lautoka will now be able access clean drinking water during natural disasters.
Speaking at the launch of the $7,000 Disaster Management Water project today, Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Minister Rosy Sofia Akbar acknowledged the commitment of the Soroptimist International Fiji and its regional partners for the timely assistance of the water projects for the needy.
Akbar said she is confident that the residents have a reason to be thankful to Soroptimist International and its regional partners for easing their water woes of the past.
She said Soroptimist is already contributing towards government’s commitment to provide clean water to all Fijians.
She also said the projects of such nature not only benefit the women, but the whole community and will improve their standard of living.
She added the government’s initiative to provide 91,250 litres of water to all Fijian households who are earning less than a total annual income of $30,000 indicate the importance of water in one’s daily living.
President of the Soroptimist International, Zareena Bi said the project started in April after the request was made to the organization.
She said the water tank is now placed at the Drasa Muslim Primary School as it is an evacuation centre for these communities.
