Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the late Police Constable Siuta Niumataiwalu is a hero who gave his life in the service of his fellow Fijians.
The late Niumataiwalu was stabbed to death on Monday while responding to a case of theft in Lautoka.
The man charged with his murder will appear in the Lautoka Magistrates Court this afternoon.
Bainimarama met personally with Niumataiwalu's family last night and conveyed the sincerest gratitude and deepest sympathy of the Fijian people.
The Prime Minister says the accounts from his family and fellow officers paint a picture of a Fijian of high character and extraordinary bravery.
Bainimarama says the late Police Constable Niumataiwalu will be missed dearly by a grateful nation.
He says day in and day out, policewomen and men place themselves between innocent Fijians and threats to their safety.
Bainimarama says in honouring Constable Niumataiwalu’s memory, let us all commit to fostering the peace and harmony he gave his life to preserve.
