Series leaders Argentina lost to Australia 26-19 in their first pool match of the HSBC Singapore 7s.
Australia started strong, scoring their first try in the first minute of the match through James Turner to give them a 7-0 lead.
The Argentinians responded with a try to Santiago Mare in the 4th minute, however, Ben Dowling crossed over the try line in the dying minutes of the first half to ensure they led 12-5 at halftime.
Nathan Lawson added another try to Australia in the second half to give them a 19-5 lead, while Turner’s second try in the 11th minute put Australia in a comfortable 24-5 lead.
The Argentinians rallied back and scored two tries from Matias Osadczuk and Gaston Revol, but it wasn’t enough to give them the win.
Looking at other results, the USA beat Fiji 33-14, Ireland defeated Great Britain 19-5, South Africa thumped Spain 31-7, and France beat Samoa 17-0.
Meanwhile, Fiji will face Great Britain at 10.30 tonight before playing Ireland at 5.37pm tomorrow in their final pool match. The Cup quarter-finals will start at 11 tomorrow night, the semi-finals will start at 5.48pm Sunday, and the final will kick off at 10.21pm Sunday.
