The Sigatoka Town Council will be the first council in the country to declare its bus stand and market area smoke free from this Friday.
Acting Chief Executive Officer, Anand Sami Pillay said they conducted a survey last year and the reaction from the public has been positive as this step will paint a positive image of the town for tourists too.
He said the Council will start with the market and bus stand and slowly work towards widening the zone within the town in conjunction with the Ministry of Health.
Pillay said their enforcement officers will work with the Tobacco Control Unit officers to see that people comply with the no smoking rule and anyone caught smoking at the Bus stand or Market area will be taken to task.
