Fibre artist and designer, Shona Tawhiao will be one of the designers to watch at this year’s Fiji Fashion Week as she showcases preserving culture through fashion.
Tawhiao has received international acclaim for her creative practice, designing and making contemporary woven garments using voivoi or Pandanus leaves.
Tawhiao’s structural, intricately woven flax creations have graced the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the catwalks of New York Fashion Week.
She urges upcoming designers who will be part of this year’s Fiji Fashion Week to keep a bit of their culture in their designs so that it's more unique and stands out from the others.
Tawaiao who facilitated a workshop for 30 women yesterday says this is part of her contribution in trying to keep Maori culture alive and this is what she is advocating during the Fiji Fashion Week.
Other designers who’s work will feature at this year’s Fiji Fashion Week include, Michael Mausio, Robert Kennedy, Epeli Tuibeqa, Aisea Konrote and Hupfeld Hoerder.
Fiji Fashion Week’s Cruise Resort Show will be held on Friday night while the Luxe Resort Show will be held on Saturday night at 7pm at the FMF Gymnasium.
