Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu has strongly condemned the recent violent attack on students in Nabua, Suva, earlier this week.
In a statement, Seruiratu says such acts of violence have no place in our society and must be addressed urgently and resolved firmly.
He says he is deeply troubled by the reports of students being attacked in what should be a safe environment, and our children deserve to feel secure in their communities, and any threat to their safety is unacceptable.
The Leader of the Opposition says he commends the call of the new Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, for a swift and thorough investigation into the incident and for those who are responsible to be held accountable.
He reiterated the Commissioner's call by calling on parents to talk to their children about the consequences of their actions before the police step in and it's too late.
He also highlighted that violence, particularly against young people must not be tolerated, and those who engage in such acts must face the full force of the law.
Seruiratu also urges the government and relevant authorities to prioritize measures that enhance community safety, including stronger enforcement of laws, conflict resolution programs, and initiatives that address youth violence at its root causes.
He adds it is critical that we work together as a nation, government, community leaders, law enforcement, and parents to prevent such incidents from happening again.
Seruiratu reiterates that our youth are the future of Fiji, and we must do everything possible to protect and guide them towards a better path.
He also urges all Fijians to stand united against violence and to foster a culture of respect and non-violence in our communities.
