The Chairman of the Serua Provincial Council, Joeli Ratulevu Cawaki is questioning the Committee on the Review of the Great Council of Chiefs as to what is the importance and meaning of the GCC to the iTaukei people living in their villages because in the past, what has been discussed during the meeting was not relayed to the people.
While speaking during the consultation at Ro Kuruduadua House in Navua, Cawaki says nowadays, most villages don’t hold their Bose Ni Vanua where representatives from each clan propose their development plan.
He questions how leaders will know what is happening in their province if the Bose ni Vanua is not being held.
He says the new GCC should set up a better framework where things discussed during the meeting should be relayed down to the people in the villages.
He acknowledges that the meeting should only be attended by chiefs or the people with chiefly bloodline.
The Serua Provincial Council Chairman says the GCC should also look at how iTaukei land issues are handled because it has been one of the most contentious issues that has existed for a long time.
He also confirms that there will be three GCC representatives from the province of Serua.
The GCC will be held on Bau Island next Wednesday and Thursday.
