As the 68th Miss Hibiscus Festival approaches, one contestant stands out for her profound connection to Suva City and that is 27-year-old graphic designer, Semantafa Naomi Lavulo-Samisoni.
She is representing the local fashion brand Hefrani in this year’s pageant.
Although she currently resides in Nadi, Semantafa's love for Suva runs deep, intertwined with her family's rich history in the city.
Her parents were raised in Suva, and her childhood holidays were often spent in the vibrant capital.
From painting with her uncle to playing card games with her grandparents, her fondest memories are rooted in Suva.
Semantafa recalls one of her favorite past times - the joy of afternoon drives by the seawall, watching families exercise and students play rugby and basketball, where she would get lost in the beauty of the sunset.
She says the aquatic centre’s vast swimming pool and the hockey turf across the road also left a lasting impression on her, as they were unlike anything she had seen in Nadi.
Semantafa says Rotuma Day holds a special place in her heart.
She recalls how emotional it was to see her family's participation in traditional dances, and her rich ties with Tongan and Chinese Fijian heritage, further deepens her connection to Suva.
Her first modeling experience during Fiji Fashion Week in Suva was a pivotal moment, providing her with immense confidence. Inspired by the city's fearless expression through art, Semantafa feels a deep sense of belonging in Suva’s vibrant community.
The festival, which will take place from August 31st to September 7th at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Civic Centre, promises to be a grand celebration of tradition, culture, and community, with FMF and Vodafone as Gold Sponsors.
