A second fire incident at the Vatuwaqa Primary School in 11 months has damaged a classroom and it is very sad to see how little the school management has learned from the previous fire.
National Fire Authority Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane says NFA Command Centre received a call at 7.51pm yesterday about a school fire at Vatuwaqa Primary School at Ratu Sukuna Road in Suva.
He says upon investigation, the crew established that the fire originated from a vacant classroom where combustibles (papers and books) were being stored.
He says quick action by the firefighters managed to control the fire in a wooden classroom before it escalated to its free burning stage.
The classroom sustained only 2 percent damage.
He says in the last incident on 12th December 2022, the school’s canteen and school block that catered for Years 1, 2 and 3 were destroyed.
The main block that catered for the school’s administration office, Year 8 and the school library were partly damaged.
NFA says police are investigating the incident.
