Hopes are fading for a woman missing after she fell overboard from the Australia‑based P&O Pacific Dawn cruise ship in the Coral Sea yesterday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said the passenger overboard alert was issued about 4pm and the search continued through the night and this morning.

P&O Cruises spokesman David Jones said the ship continued in a search pattern throughout the night.

He said in a statement that Pacific Dawn will continue searching into this morning while recognising expert advice suggests hopes of survival in the prevailing sea conditions would have diminished significantly during the night.
