Minister for Education Dr Mahendra Reddy said the scaling of examination marks would be discussed further following a Cabinet decision on the matter.

This follows an independent review team which was set up by the ministry to conduct an extensive research on the advantages and disadvantages of scaling of marks.

Last month the review teams had different views on the scaling of marks when they submitted their report to the Minister for Education.

One of the team members, Professor of Economics and Head of Economics School at USP Satya Paul said one of their main recommendations was to remove the scaling of external examination marks from year 12 and 13.

However his colleague Associate Professor of Mathematics and Director of Research at USP Dr Jito Vanualailai did not agree with this.

Dr Vanualailai said it’s still important to scale marks as scaling does recognizes the difficulty of subjects and does not discriminate those who attempt these subjects.
